Let’s have a repeat of the prospects game, OK?

So the caps are on pace for about 96 shots today.

Nah, but he did take a nasty puck to the face that knocked him out of the conference finals last year.
by Ben Rothenberg on Dec 20, 2008 1:47 PM EST up reply actions
He got hit in the face in the playoffs against Pittsburgh and missed two games, but he hasn’t worn one since. I couldn’t tell ya why he’s got one on today.

Missed the whole rest of the series actually.

Injury?
Lasse Kukonen played only 1:23 (3 shifts) in the first. If he’s out and the Capitals play half as well as they did in the first it’s going to be a long day for the Flyers remaining D.
That’s a blessing for the Flyers, believe me.

Metropolit was a late scratch and Kukkonen dressed as a forward today.

Yeah, seems like a real good guy.
There’s a great story about him that was in the Philadelphia Inquirer back during training camp.

For what reason is Comcast not doing this game in HD?
by PaintDrinkingPete on Dec 20, 2008 1:54 PM EST reply actions
That’s a good question considering it’s on CSN Philly in HD.

This is a much anticipated game for many fans…you’d think they would be trying to put the best product out there…

I classify this as “widescreen standard definition”

Oh, and by the way – are these the regular Philly home unis or are these just their 3rd/throwbacks?
Because, really, these are classy old school.
3rd/throwbacks. Black are regular home sweaters.
by PaintDrinkingPete on Dec 20, 2008 2:03 PM EST up reply actions
They’re the thirds. They debuted on Black Friday. I think a lot of us hope they become the standard home jerseys real soon.

I may not like the Flyers…but fair enough, these orange sweaters are an improvement over the black ones.

Jesus, Niittymaki has AO’s number today.

Time
Green: 21 minutes
Ovechkin: 17:41, which is a bit absurd for a winger, but he is playing point on the powerplay.
course it’s hindsight, but I was not sure about this goalie switch strategy by Bruce. You gotta guy in theo who’s low on the confidence meter right now, coming off an injury and who hasn’t played for a while, and now he’s getting torched and run over to boot.
ballsy.

Isn’t the rule three fights and you get a misconduct?

To all the people who were dying to see Brash fight.
You got your wish. I still don’t see what the point was.
The Flyers Fans have probably listened to too much Steve Coates. Is there a dumber bastard anywhere on the continent?
The drunk bastard caught a hat the first time and put it on.
It was fitted, multi-colored Phillies hat.

The refs are told not to step in between, but usually there isn’t a five yard separation between the fighters. Asham was scared and backed down.
Uh… not what happened. He was getting ready by taking his helmet off and rolling up his sleeves.

I don’t think that would have been pretty…count on Brash marking that one down for next time
hell of a game by Nitty-congrats, and we’ll catchya the next time around. good stuff today.
Completely agree… Asham probably would’ve gotten his bell rung, although probably not Cote-style.
When it comes to Brashear though, it’s worthy of praise just having the balls to fight him. I know the problem I had when he was a Flyer was that he didn’t fight enough (and from what I read it seems that’s how you guys feel too), but it’s not because he doesn’t want to…. he just has no takers.
Nitty was out of this world today. Biron’s flu bug might just cost him the starting job.
Looking forward to next time, see ya.

Sadly, Biggie, I missed the game. My recap won’t be too exciting.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Just out of Curiosity
When was the last time a team outshot its opponent by 20 and lost by six goals?
the fights in the third were just old school gratutiousness, .but the Cote smackdown in the first, right after Lupul’s goal, is the essence of fighting in the NHL: we had the momentum, dominating them really, they get it back with a goal, and boom, next shift (I think). And what happened? We get the momentum right back. Too bad we couldn’t turn it into goals—today’s game score could have easily been the other way around had we netted that first one right away.
On a side note, I gotta wonder what Bruce said after the game.
Speaking of… how did the Philly fans behave themselves in this thread?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Models of etiquette, as always, JP ;)

I’d expect nothing less. Just checkin’ – sometimes people choose these types of games to make their debuts around here, and that’s not necessarily welcome.
I know you’re decent enough… for a Flyers fan. :)
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Didn’t see it.
The long and short of today for me was that early in the week the wife asked if we could go to her folks place for brunch today to do a pre-Xmas gift exchange. I glanced at the schedule, saw the Flyers, assumed it was a 7pm game and said yes.
I regretted my sloppiness… until around 2:30.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
That said, I don’t think he was pleased with the way the game ended.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
feast your eyes on the first period if you have a chance…Locker said it: our best road period of the year, and zilch to show for it. you’ll be shaking your head. it’s downhill from there.
We got the ’backup ’Johnny today, not #1 starter Johnny.
Brash was the human highlight reel—the beatdown of Cote in the first was vintage.
I did see that first beatdown. I wept.
And you had to know after that first period – when they dominated but were down – that they’d lose, no?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
no, actually I thought we’d come back and keep it up in the second—that’s whatcha get for being a fan, I guess…
I thought the third was a disgrace, and I’m not talking about the fighting. A total lack of concentration, bad positioning, odd man rushes out the wazoo, no one backchecking…that’s why I wanted to know how BB sounded post game. Actually, you don’t even need sound…he turns beet red when he’s geeked up and his head looks like it’s even more balloon like and is about to pop.
The other interesting thing is putting in Theo for the third. I heard no mention of a Johnny injury. Very questionable strategy in hindsight (natch), down only 3-1
My guess – total conjecture – is his hip was bothering him (travel, day game gives him less time to stretch out pre-game, etc.). Otherwise, it makes no sense, even if he wasn’t sharp (which it sounds as if he was not).

I made my debut when it was only 1-0 and you guys were owning possession, just for the record. :)

Oh yeah, forgot about that.
So I made my debut when the outcome was still up in the air, then. =P

Can’t help myself.
I’ve been reading Japer’s Rink for almost a year now. I was “Ben” during the playoffs last year if you remember, JP.

Oh, nice. I had no idea. Welcome back.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I’m watching this on Tivo, and I swear the Caps post game show has shown this clip of Ovechkin blowing a snot rocket like five times.
I think the field blow is Ovi’s trademark move. When they had that “Ovech-cam” game last year, he must’ve done it 90 times.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Btw, 192 comments on a day when the goalies allow seven goals on 28 shots against and not a single mention of Simeon Varlamov…
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
just browse Caps insider. People were practically hoping we could airlift him to Hershey in time for the third.

not that I agree of course. I’d rather him keep getting work in the AHL.

Yes, but haven’t we determined that the commentariat at Caps Insider is marginally literate?
I was saying it as a point of pride, that our group of folks is a little more measured and, well, smart.

Simeon Varlamov Simeon Varlamov Simeon Varlamov Simeon Varlamov
Weird how HE looked like the vet in net the other night…but I also agree with Sombrero on where he should be for a little longer.
Actually, I alluded to him.
His return is inevitable. The timing is another matter.
To which I say: “a couple years down the road.” Varly (Valapski?) will only see one or two more games this season, and I’m OK with that.
I've won as many games for the Capitals as Michael Belhumeur has.
