The Oates trade to Philly
I remember when the Caps traded Oates to Philly. Everyone thought we had ripped off the Flyers big time. Particularly after he ended just being a rent-a-player for them. A 1st, a 2nd, and a 3rd, AND a great (at the time) goalie prospect??!!
Turns out, the trade was pretty much a wash.
Yes and no. Mostly yes, but they traded that first round pick (#26-Martin Vagner), their own 2002 second round pick (#42-Marius Holtet) and their 2003 sixth round pick (#185-Francis Wathier) to Dallas for the Stars’ 2002 first round pick, thirteenth overall, which they used to draft… Alex Semin.
So when it’s all said and done, the Caps basically got Semin for Oates. I’ll take it.

Too bad...
With all respect to Chris Simon and Monsieur Juneau, too bad we could never get a world-class winger to play next to Oates. He still had some tread in the tires when he joined us in 1997. Having a first-line of “Oates + Stud Winger” and a second-line of “Bondra + whomever” would have made us a much more meaningful team in the late 90s/early 2000s. At least Oates helped us get to the SC Finals.
Nyls drinking game
Wanna get wasted during the next Caps game? Take a drink every time Nylander gratuitously pirouettes, curls or otherwise spins. You’ll be hammered by his 5th shift. Then try saying 5th shift three times fast.
I do this at the games. The people in my section love it.
Just to keep this on-topic, Oates was a brilliant passer. Pretty much anyone you put alongside him was guaranteed to have a career year.
I loved having Adam Oates on the team. The pride of RPI along with Joe Juneau – hooray for upstate NY! I took my daughter to meet him at a Sears store in Falls Church, and she was totally delighted, as was I, since he was just such a nice guy. Half of the people in the line were irked b/c another person who was supposed to appear was Tyson Beckford, and he never showed up. Yeah, you guys will fuss at me for this, but there were a lot of things going on in the earlier days that didn’t end out as all of might have liked, but it was still exciting. And, Oatsie and Joe were part of it. Lots of guys got traded so they might have a chance to play with contenders. We’re now contenders – and all of us love it.
