Growing up, not sure why, Cote was my favorite player. I often pretended I was him while playing hockey as a kid. Always wanted a Cote jersey. Dunno why. I grew out of it when I turned 10.

Cote was my fave as well
Could your affection for Cote be because he was our best all-around defenseman from 91-92 to 94-95, when we had more flashy, but less effective defensemen grace our blue line (Hatcher, Iafrate)? Cote in his prime was the most underrated defenseman in the NHL. Don’t forget, he made Canada’s World Cup 1996 team – pretty impressive!

Most comparable current Cap: Poti?
Co-Co had a better shot, but in terms of being a solid all-around D you could play in any situation, I’m thinking the guy currently wearing #3 is the most like the #3 above.

There was a day when Sylvains roamed free in the NHL: Turgeon, Cloutier, Lefebvre and others. But per HockeyReference.com, the Sylvains were extinct by the end of the 2002-03 season. Sad, really.

Sly Turgeon
Still got my #16 Hartford home white, circa 1986.
Shoulda had the name ripped off and replaced with The Little Ball of Hate that was The Beeker.

Cote is the tough answer to get on the trivia question about the 1992-93 Caps with 3 defensmen scoring over 20 goals (the only time it has happened in NHL history). The usual answers you’ll get, even from long-time fans are Iafrate, Hatcher and Johansson. Callie Jo never hit for 20, but CoCo did in 1992-93, while Hatcher and Iafrate both blasted in over 30 goals each.
Iafrate was a first team NHL All-Star too, and runner up in the Norris voting that year. Hatcher wasn’t an All-Star despite scoring more goals than Iafrate. It’s something I still smile about….
That Caps team also had 6 other 20 goal guys: Bondra, Ridley, Hunter, Pivonka, Khristich and Elynuik. And Kelly Miller, Mr. Checking forward, got 18…

Thanx for mentioning that about Hatcher
God how I hated him, and his punk brother too. Never got the Hatcher love.

co co beware
The stars were Hatcher and Iafrate but over the long haul, Johannson and Co co were the better players.

Cote was our best player in the Rangers series 1994
Almost won game 5 on his own.

Another dumb trade by Eddie Johnston, although Niko was fun to watch
