Chris Cooley: New Hockey Fan

Redskins tight end and blogger extraordinaire Chris Cooley has a new-found appreciation for some of D.C.'s elite athletes.

Via his blog (don't worry, this one's safe for work), Cooley recounts his trip to Saturday night's Caps/Rangers game, the first hockey game he has ever seen, in person or on television:

"I am not kidding when I tell you that what these guys do on the ice is nothing short of amazing. ...

"Now the goals were great and all but the best thing about the whole night didn't happen to be the scoring nor was it a fight (there were close calls but no real ones). It was however, the blocked penalty shot in the third period that would have tied the game with about ten minutes left. Backup goalie Brent Johnson bitch slapped the puck away from Rangers captain Chris Drury before he could even think about taking the shot. It was amazing."

Amazing indeed (and well-described).

Cooley concludes his post with a message to all non-believers:

"[T]he Capitals officially have two new fans. And if you're not a fan I challenge you to get out to a game...you'll be hooked. It is unreal!"

I'm not sure whether or not the second fan to whom he's referring is his buddy that he accidentally posted on his blog back in September, but regardless, it's good to see someone spreading the word about hockey and saying what we've all been saying for years: try it, you'll like it.

Big h/t to Simply Sensational on the link.

Update: It's been pointed out by Cooley blog regulars that despite the "posted by Chris Cooley" tag, the post was actually written by his brother Tanner (was CC even there?). Whatevs.

Oh god, this is like my two favorite things colliding into one beautiful ending.

This is like chocolate meets peanut butter. Favorite NFL player meets favorite sports team.

I think it's great The CAPS are supporting the Skins and the Skins are supporting the CAPS. It give you a warm fuzzy feeling. Cooley is so cool, I could see him being a hockey player in his next life. Lavar Arrington did a gig in between period on Sat. night that was pretty cool as well.

ROCK the RED- No matter who is in goal!!

If I had to guess, I would say it was Tanner (brother) who went along with Chris to the Caps game. He was tagged in the blog post and is also the person in the picture of Caps at the Skins game, and is in this picture as well:

@ SS: I like my suggestion that he blogs about his junk as its own entity better. :)

Actually, my friend was at a Caps-Sabres game last December and saw Chris Cooley there with Mike Sellers and Ryan Zimmerman. They had front row seats in the corner, so I'm guessing he saw a pretty good game.

Yeah good call JP and Joe Dumas, I'm just happy that Cooley made the effort to promote Caps hockey as the real deal.

I thought they interviewed Cooley at a game last season with two other Redskins.

I was at the game and they put him on the big screen in the 1st period. Also there last year (he was sitting in my section) with Sellers and CO. Good to see other DC sports people at the Games... My favorite is when Champbell goes. Combines my 3 favorite teams- CAPS, Skins and Auburn.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
