Snip Snip: Former Caps Edition

The Vancouver Canucks have placed Matt Pettinger on waivers. Also not making an NHL club out of camp? Brian Willsie. Good luck, gents.

The Ferraro brothers were added to Las Vegas' (ECHL) roster today. Trying to work this into an acronym like AFRICA - Another Former - - Caps Announcement.

So does that make the Pettinger-for-Cooke trade a wash? Since the Caps made the playoffs did they win that trade? And how did Pettinger fall so far so fast that he can't even make that team as a defensive specialist?

Petty was a one hit wonder. Put the Hershey bears against the NHL teams and someone's still going to score every once in a while (Although this year the bears might actually be better than a few NHL teams)

@tg

The Caps won the Cooke-Pettinger trade, because Cooke's contract is up and he's not on the team. We don't have to pay for him. Vancouver is stuck with Pettinger, even if they did waive him. I think the reason why we traded Pettinger was because he had 2 years left on his contract, and Cooke had 1. It's all about cap space.

It's too bad, really. I always liked Pettinger at all the events I saw him. He is a very decent dude. Wish him the best in whatever career path he chooses.

So, did Laing clear waivers?

@ Anon: Yes (and as a reminder to all, check the "What We're Reading" sidebar during the day every day for updates on the Caps and the rest of the League).

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
