Tuesday Miscellany

Some odds and ends on our last hockey-less Tuesday for a while: Darren Eliot likes the way the Caps' 2007-08 season ended, but not because he's a jerk (George James Malik, by the way, is not impressed with Eliot).... David Steckel's appearance on this Top 5 list is really something, given his age and experience (via the red skate).... Caps prospect Greg Burke is ready for the USHL.... Karl Alzner likes chocolate and turkey.

Yeah, I've pretty much got nothin'.

Heads up, your link on the Steckel story goes to a CNN story about not enough minorities at the State department. Or is he Ambassador Steckel now?

Thanks, Matt. I've fixed it (and emailed Secretary Rice about a possible Ambassadorship for Donald Brashear).

As good as Steckel is at draws, Fedorov may be even better. Between those two and Boyd Gordon, the Caps are extremely strong in the circle, which is a huge plus when you have the offensive firepower that they do on the ice.

I mean, seriously, who doesn't like turkey and chocolates...mmmmmm chocolate.

hopefully Steckel can do more than just win draws this year....

@ NS: Agreed, and I've said it here before - I think Stecks could evolve into an effective front-of-the-net disrupter kind of player on the PP. He's a big body and big guys don't score 30 goals in the AHL by accident (small guys, however, sometimes do).

Take a look at almost every Cup winner for the last couple of decades and you'll find a guy like Stecks who played a key role in winning the Cup. I'm talking about a player who can win key defensive zone faceoffs, kill penalties and shut down the opposition's top line. Five years from now, we could be talking about Steckel the way Detroit fans talk about Kris Draper.

except Steckel can't skate worth shit.

here's hoping, though....

Heh. So much for the Nylander rumors, sez Tarik.

And he's back on the ice at Kettler. Now where're our big guys? We know Semin's late, and probably Ovie too. How about Kozlov?

For those of you who have been around longer than I have: any reason to think that the guys who are here early are here because they're fighting for roster spots? The guys who are pretty much guaranteed roster spots aren't as worried and will amble in a little later? Lord knows the Caps' lines are deep enough that someone's going to get bumped and nobody wants it to be them.

@ Andi: Ovie will be here next week (he has a commitment in town on the 14th that I know of), and Kozlov is currently skating with the Panthers down in Florida (he must live down there in the off season), but I'm not sure when he'll be in town. No idea on Fedorov or Green.

Generally, veterans know how much work the need in the pre-pre-season, and some get itchy/anxious/bored and want to get back sooner. I wouldn't necessarily assume it's b/c they fear for their jobs, though it can't hurt to be here (ahem, Messrs. Fleischmann and Fehr).

Personally, I'm shocked that Flash, Fehr and Bourque aren't here already. If I were any of them, I'd have pitched a tent outside Ketler waiting to get in.

Flash has probably given up on life and has decided to pursue his ever diminishing NHL career on EA's NHL 09 game.

i would be surprised if he is not the one to get bumped.

random: i hope the Caps mgmt talks Pothier into retiring. Not because we have a crowded defensive corps, but because i am worried that he will force himself back into playing shape, take a big hit, and end up a freakin vegetable.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
