Capitals Acquire Friesen

The Washington Capitals have acquired left wing Jeff Friesen from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a conditional pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. (According to that article, Friesen was born Aug. 5, 1076. I hadn't realized he was that old).

Friesen's scouting report on TSN.ca lists under assets "Is one of the fastest skaters in the NHL and can operate at high speeds because of deft hands. Has tremendous durability," and under flaws "Has not lived up to offensive expectations. Can be lazy at times. Is too streaky in terms of production."

McKeen's offers this in their notes: "Recharged the batteries last season after staggering through a miserable Stanley Cup hangover in '03-04, plummeting to the lowest totals since his rookie year during the lockout-shortened '94-95 season .. a rugged, superbly-conditioned winger .. never seemed to find a comfort level without side-kick Jamie Langenbrunner, and seldom displayed the gritty, intense game that showcases his game-breaking speed .. durable pick having missed just 17 games in 10 NHL seasons, but little good that does unless the lockout has reset his game."

Forecaster notes: "The speedy Friesen can create chances and find holes for scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, he hasn't buried his chances often enough since leaving San Jose in 2001. He has also displayed a lack of intensity, which is a definite no-no in New Jersey. On a positive note, he has become more defensively responsible."

Bottom line: here's hoping a fresh start kickstarts this guy's career, because there's little to get excited about in these blurbs. Oh, and don't expect to see Alexander Semin any time soon.
